Cities Where Millennials Want To Be

Posted on June 1, 2018

We analyzed data published by Realtor.com’s team of economic researchers surrounding some of America’s largest cities and the interest shown on listings in those cities, separated by disclosed age of the person viewing the listing, during the time period of August 2016 and February 2017.

The City of Angels came in the Top Ten at spot #6. Millennials are attracted to Los Angeles for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the things millennials find appealing:

  1. Short commutes. With so many living opportunities, like those created by CGI, millennials can choose to live where they work.

  2. Abundance of outdoor experiences. L.A. offers mountainous terrain, wooded parks, nearby skiing and even the beach.

  3. Accessible culture. Community and cultural centers, restaurants, art, museums, music. LA is no stranger to culture and sidewalk talent.

  4. Nightlife every night of the week. While L.A. offers traditional nightlife, like bars, restaurants and live music, some developers, like CGI are developing residences tailored with “stay-in” nightlife experiences. These are highly desirable to millennials, who often opt for the less expensive, hang-with-friends environment.

  5. Jobs. L.A. also offers a wide variety of jobs, including hospitality, film and new-to-the-neighborhood tech giants, like Snapchat, Beachbody and even Google.

Inflation and the Fed’s response, as well as trends that emerged from the pandemic, have clearly had an impact on the industry across all of the sectors. Besides the effect of, say, ongoing remote work on the beleaguered office asset class or the slowing pace of rent increases in multifamily, these executives have also had to navigate an increasingly difficult capital markets environment. I have some bad news for this group: the near-term future doesn’t look any easier. Enter our selection of Best Bosses this year. This year’s picks were made at least in part based on their resiliency and ability to position their companies for future growth, whenever that might occur. We are confident these strengths will see them through what could be choppy waters ahead.
