Preserving Community While Social Distancing

Punch Today In The Face

Community matters.

It’s vital for mental health, physical health, education, and productivity.

Multifamily tenants are letting us know that social distancing has definitely made “community” a challenge. While we are strong proponents of doing what we can to “flatten the curve”, it is also our duty to be innovative and stewards of the communities we have created here at CGI.

Our mixed-use residential properties were designed around the same principle that drives our success at HQ – family and community. These values encompass everything that we do and pump inspiration into every decision that we make for these properties.

We also are proponents of incorporating consumer electronic technology at our properties and the decision to offer amenities aimed at connecting residents virtually and making every aspect of daily life easier and more convenient is paying off right now.

Residents are enjoying uninterrupted communication with management. They can place one-touch takeout and delivery orders. They can coordinate help for their pets, so that as new “work from home” employees, they don’t have to spend time and energy trying to find a pet sitter to take their dog while they have important calls. These amenities and more are provided to them.

Here are some other amenities we love right now:

  • Virtual coworking events – these events help hold remote workers accountable and increase productivity
  • Virtual get-togethers – wine tastings, cooking classes, game nights, and virtual outings to museums
  • Virtual fitness and meditation classes – including options for virtual personal training sessions
  • Virtual kids programs – from learning events to hangouts, these are great opportunities to keep children entertained

We’ve always believed that community is vital, and in tough times, it is even more important.

The fact that we are able to support our residents at this time shows our resilience as a society. We’re learning that these virtual alternatives save not only money but also have a positive impact on the environment.

Every opportunity should be used to its fullest – and these times are no exception.

Best Bosses | Here are Real Estate Forum’s picks for Best Bosses in 2023.

The last year has not been easy for the head of a commercial real estate company. Inflation and the Fed’s response, as well as trends that emerged from the pandemic, have clearly had an impact on the industry across all of the sectors. Besides the effect of, say, ongoing remote work on the beleaguered office asset class or the slowing pace of rent increases in multifamily, these executives have also had to navigate an increasingly difficult capital markets environment. I have some bad news for this group: the near-term future doesn’t look any easier. Enter our selection of Best Bosses this year. This year’s picks were made at least in part based on their resiliency and ability to position their companies for future growth, whenever that might occur. We are confident these strengths will see them through what could be choppy waters ahead.
