The James of Hollywood Opens As A Boutique Residential Space for Both Long And Short-Term Stays
Los Angeles, CA (July 30, 2020) – Today, CGI Real Estate Investment Strategies, the team behind Villa Carlotta, the most sought-after long-term residential residence in Hollywood, launches The James, a boutique residential space in the heart of Hollywood offering long and short-term stays. Steps away from the iconic Hollywood Boulevard, Musso & Frank’s Grill and Vine Street, The James is nestled in Hollywood history with easy access to the 101 Freeway, allowing residents to easily explore all that Los Angeles has to offer.
Located at 1830 North Cherokee Avenue, The James has 73 units, from spacious studios to one bedrooms, ranging in size from 350 – 810 square feet. With nine-foot ceilings, all units have an abundance of natural light, hardwood floors, spacious walk-in closets, and ensuite bathrooms. Spacious kitchens are fitted with all appliances and have expansive dining areas. Each unit features bespoke furniture from local millwork artisans, custom American walnut beds with a brass trim and leather headboards, mid-century modern side tables, retro seventies plush velvet sofas and statement floral walls from House of Hackney.
Managed by Bread & Salt Hospitality, resident amenities will include day-time concierge service, housekeeping, laundry services and a state-of-the-art fitness center with Peloton bikes, treadmills, and weights. Each unit will also be fully equipped with high speed wi-fi, smart Apple TV televisions, Marshall speakers and fully stocked with Byredo products and robes. On-site parking is also available for all residents.
“We’re delighted to offer short- and long-term residents luxury and upscale homes right in the in the heart of Hollywood,” said Gidi Cohen, Founder and CEO of CGI Real Estate Investment Strategies. “While appreciating the city’s beautiful past, residents will be able to enjoy impressive and modern amenities easily visiting other Los Angeles neighbourhoods.”
Designed as a 1920’s Mediterranean revival style apartment-hotel, the building was developed through a design-build partnership between contractor Samuel F. Bard & Company and famed architectural designer Lewis A. Smith, behind many of Los Angeles’ first-ever cinemas including the Ritz and Beverly Theater. The James, previously known as ‘The Commodore of Hollywood’, became home to countless Hollywood actors as they launched their careers including Robert Vaughn, Clara Blandick, Aubrey Scotto, Addie McPhail, Ernest (Ernie) Adams, William Edmunds, and Matthew Boulton. The building later continued to be a firm favourite for Hollywood stars and musicians, including the legendary rock band KISS, who adored the building’s rich history, architectural detail and unique location.
CGI Real Estate Investment Strategies focused on restoring the unique, historical details of the building, revealing the once-concealed ornate entry portico with expansive detailed moulding and dramatic arched opening. With the expansion of the lobby, the original features were preserved to protect the history of the building.

The design and concept was brought to life by New York & LA based designers, Nil Erbil of StyleMood Design and Brian McGrory who have partnered together on previous projects and whose work has been published in Architectural Design and Elle Décor.
“Our vision was to tap into the music scene of Hollywood and celebrate the incredible history of the industry here in Los Angeles while creating a community feel and home away from home for those in the creative industries,” Brian McGrory, Creative Director who also worked on CGI’s sister property, which was until now Hollywood’s best kept secret, Villa Carlotta.
“From the moment you walk into the lobby, the mood is warm and seducing, embodying both rock’n’roll and relaxed bohemia. A peaceful haven minutes from the busy boulevards of Hollywood, retro inspiration is juxtaposed with references of Californian soul,” said Nil Erbil of StyleMood Design. “The aim was to create the feeling of a private members club, with communal areas to work, read, play chess and play vinyl on the vintage record player.”
Nil Erbil has over 17 years-experience in interior design and bringing creative concepts to life, creating bohemian, vibrant and soulful interiors for her private residential clients as well as hospitality projects including The Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyers in Montauk, as well as Sid Lee Agency, Metrograph and Habitas members club in New York City.
A unique, gem in the heart of Hollywood encapsulating nine decades of history, The James was first established in 1927, a time during which the movie industry in Los Angeles was witnessing a huge boom. The space has been re-imagined and restored opening this July as an apartment-hotel, welcoming new residents and guests.

The Palm Room adjacent to the lobby, features a custom-designed palm mural and plush velvet layers in both the retro-fitted booths and bespoke curtains– nodding to retro Hollywood with a fresh perspective. The perfect place for a morning coffee, a bespoke neon sign sits above a vintage wicker peacock love-seat with House of Hackney cushions and a custom-designed marble bar sits opposite the Parisian café marble tables.
